When A Tree Is On The House

This is the situation the rest of the page is really about, and the thing most homeowners get wrong is assuming the tree is the problem. Frequently the structure is holding the tree up, which means the weight above has to come off in controlled pieces before anything is pulled away. On a Chevy Chase job this summer a split catalpa was resting on a newly finished garage; the garage was load-bearing until the canopy above it was gone.

Three things decide the method once we are on site:

• What is under tension. Limbs bent and loaded under a roof move sharply and unpredictably when cut. The order of cuts is worked out before a saw starts, not during.
• Whether the tree can be climbed. A storm-damaged tree with a lifted root plate cannot be trusted to hold anyone, so it comes off the structure from a crane or a tracked lift instead.
