Patios here are built the same way as the walkways: excavate, compact a stone base, screed, set the surface, and restrain the edges. The visible difference years later is almost never the material — it is whether the base was compacted in lifts and whether water was given a route off and out. Layout usually gets set by the shade the surrounding trees actually throw.
